Earth Day was founded by Gaylord Nelson when he was a US senator and is still commended today for creating a new age of environmental activism.

What do we do on Earth Day?
On Earth Day, you can do a vast variety of different activities to help your planet. First, become aware of the problems, which we talk about more in the "why" question. Understand what is at risk and what you will be fighting for. Next, take action! Plan out and execute  on steps to become more eco-friendly, as simple as carpooling or taking shorter showers. You could also support or join an environmental organization such as Greenpeace. Finally, spread the word! Talk to family, friends, even strangers, about climate change and what they can do to help stop it.

When was Earth Day founded?
The first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970. This year's is the 47th anniversary!

Where is Earth Day celebrated?
Earth Day has become a global phenomenon. More than 193 countries officially recognize the occasion and communities around the world hold their own versions of Earth Days. For example, more than 100,000 people rode bikes in China or 28 million trees were planted in Afghanistan a few years ago.

Why is it important to have Earth Day?
The purpose of Earth Day is solely to take extra pride in our incredible planet and do as much as possible to care for it. Our planet, that has given us life for about 4.6 billion years, has been experiencing tremendous changes due to human effects such as global warming, deforestation, and much more. This includes rising sea levels causing animals like polar bears to lose their homes, and huge chunks of beautiful rainforests such as the Amazon to disappear. Additionally, temperatures have increased by about 1.53 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880. Clearly, Earth Day is definitely one of the most important days of the year as it unites our diverse species with saving our planet.
