Sheldon, Your Shell!
Have you ever wondered about life under the sea? Well Sheldon the Sea Snail's adventures are an engaging way to teach children about climate change. This beloved sea snail goes on his daily walk, but begins to notice that his shell is cracking: "Sheldon, your shell!" exclaims Finn the Fish. As the continue traveling the sea, Sheldon and Finn meet creatures such as Connie the Crab and Sonia the Starfish who are facing similar issues. Together, they set off to fix this problem and save all the other sea creatures. They suddenly come across...a human! Her name is Scientist Hannah and she teaches them about ocean acidification and tells children how they can become ocean heroes and save the sea. |
During the summer before their senior year of high school, authors Nina Pursai and Ojaswee Chaudhary and illustrator Kristen Ratnaparkhi worked hard to bring this book to life. All three of them, including Dandilyonn co-founder Ojaswee, are passionate about fighting against climate change and love to read books, so this project was very meaningful to them. They interviewed many elementary school teachers, authors, and scientists (including a scientist named Hannah who is featured in our story) to successfully create an educational, adorable story. Once they published their book on Amazon, they began hosting presentation in 3rd-5th grade classrooms. They read the book, explained real life examples of these issues, and even showed how Krissy digitally illustrated the story! Children from schools such as Guadalupe Elementary School and adults from the College of Adaptive Arts were all entranced and inspired to take action. All proceeds from this book are being donated to Save our Shores, a local ocean preservation organization.
This storybook was created to educate children about a lesser known but dangerous and greatly impactful facet of climate change: ocean acidification. (Read our article about this topic here.) Ocean acidification, caused by the increase in carbon dioxide absorbed by the ocean, affects sea creatures all around the world. If young children can fall in love with Sheldon and his friends, they will prioritize Earth in their future and alter their daily actions to save these beautiful organisms.
